Preparing for Labor

Labor prep

It is go time Mama! 40 weeks of growing that babe and its finally time to bring them Earth side.  Packing your hospital bag can be a challenge but I am here to help!

This is going to be what I would recommend you pack to assist you with labor, post labor, and with your newborn in the beginning. I am basing a lot of these recommendations off my own personal experience with my last two natural oily labors.  This is also very-much a DIY guide for you so if you have any questions at all and are not an experienced oil user YET I would love to help you more in- depth, so reach out mama! These will be amazing assets to your beautiful labor.

Prior to going to the hospital

Induce Contractions/Get things going:

  • 10ml roller with 10 drops each Clary Sage, Myrrh, and Jasmine.  If you only have Jasmine in a roller bottle from DoTERRA then you can layer the two rollers. 1st Clary Sage + Myrrh followed by the Jasmine.

  • Apply to lower abdomen and inside of your ankles as often as desired.  I continued to apply this all throughout labor to my inside of my ankles where I could not smell it to help things not to stall out and continue to progress forward.

  • You can also add them to your bath to help jump start things with some epsom salts.

WARNING baby will not come if its not ready, but these are oils you should try to stay clear of while you are pregnant and not preparing for labor.

Reduce Bleeding blend:

  • Massage this roller blend on the insides of ankles and lower back everyday the last weeks of pregnancy to help minimize bleeding at birth. You can also roll on the insides of your thighs.

  • 10ml roller with 10-20 drops EACH

    • Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Cypress, White Fir, Geranium, and Clary Sage topped with fractionated coconut oil.

Diffuser and oils:

You will want to diffuse throughout labor to help the environment stay calm and inviting.  Not only will this be beneficial to you and baby but its also going to be great for the support team of dad, nurses, doctors, and anyone else in the room.

I used Balance and Serenity in my birth room.

Other options would include Cedarwood,  Lavender, Vetiver, Copaiba, Wild Orange, Frankincense, or Peace. Who doesn't want a peaceful and calm room for baby to enter the world into?

Applying Oils:

When applying oils to you topically REMEMBER that, while you are in labor, you may quickly change your mind and like something one minute and strongly dislike it minutes later.  So apply topically to your body with caution.  I enjoyed sprays and spraying into the air around me, on to my hospital gown, or on the pillow/bedding where I could quickly change if I wasn't enjoying it.

  • Calming Spray: 4 oz spray bottle with 10 drops each Serenity, Balance, Copabia, topped with water.  Shake and spray.

  • Energy/ Focus Spray: 4 oz spray bottle with 15 drops each Wild Orange and Peppermint topped with water. Shake and spray.

  • Nausea: Smelling Peppermint Ginger or DigestZen directly from the bottle.

Pain Control:

I thoroughly enjoyed having my husband apply Copaiba and Balance topically to my spine, hips, and feet often to help keep my emotions/mind calm and controlled.  This blend also helped with my pain management and kept me aligned for the baby to drop down further and further into the right position.

Back Labor:

Oh mama, it is not fun at all. However, many moms do experience it, depending on baby’s position.

A 10 ml roller with

  • 5 drops Black Pepper

  • 5 drops Deep Blue

  • 5 drops Copaiba

  • 5 drops Basil

  • Topped with Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • (you may like adding this to a lotion mixture for someone to be able to massage better too)

Applied to your lower back and massaged in.  My nurse put warm compresses on top of this blend which helped to intensify the oils and was wonderful at combating the pain.
