Oils + The Sun
Photosensitivity
These warm days are so good for my body, mind, and soul. As a family we love to be outside and I wanted to touch on something that everyone needs to be aware of, because I sure hope you all are getting outside and enjoying nature too.
Photosensitive, by definition means-having a chemical, electrical, or other response to light.
Photo-sensitization is the process in which ultraviolet (UV) radiation combines with a particular substance and causes chemical or biological changes.
Oils + The Sun
Some essential oils contain turocoumarins, that can cause photo-sensitization of the skin.
So if you were to apply these oils to your skin and then go enjoy the sunshine you may experience a very negative skin response that I don't want for anyone.
Which Oils?
doTERRA, as always, looks out for our safety. For our convenience, they have labeled the following bottles of oil as photosensitive:
Singles:
Bergamot
Cumin
Grapefruit
Kumquat
Lemon
Lime
Tangerine
Wild Orange
Blends:
AromaTouch
Breathe
Cheer
Citrus Bliss
Elevation
Forgive
InTune
Motivate
OnGuard
Purify
Slim and Sassy
Sunny Citrus
Zendocrine
This is not saying that you can not use these oils on sunny days. You should simply use with caution and apply to areas of your body that will be covered with clothing.
Photo-sensitivity applies to topical use of essential oils only and do not pose the same risks when used internally. When using a photosensitive essential oil topically, avoidance of sunlight is recommended for up to 12 hours after use.
